Mary J Blige – My Life II The Journey Continues(Act 1) (Album Review)

My Life II… The Journey Continues (Act 1)… Is said to be an extension of the first original classic album My Life, and maybe with that expectation is where the project for me as a whole falls short. Mary is no rookie when it comes to the music industry with this being her 10th studio album. This project is definitely reflects some of the growth and change in Mary as an artist and woman in general.  However in my opinion some tracks just don’t seem to fit that classic MJB feel that we as fans listen for when thinking about Mary and My Life.  A few of the records seem a little forced, and out of Mary’s element. One example would be “Next Level”  f/ Busta Rhymes.  Although it has a fun upbeat groove to it, it doesn’t sound like a solid fit for a woman of MJB’s caliber and experience. The concept of the song discusses wanting to take a relationship to that “next level” but the material sounds a little juvenile, like something that you would expect from a younger breakout female vocalist. Not a seasoned vet in the world of hip-hop and soul.  I do understand that music changes with the times, but Mary is also an established artist. Her sound doesn’t need to be revamped.

This project has quite a few guest appearances such as, Nas- “Feel Inside”, Busta Rhymes as mentioned on “Next Level”, Brook Lynn- “Midnight Drive”, Rick Ross- “Why”, Drake- “Mr. Wrong” and Beyonce- “Love a Woman”.  With so many dynamic names I thought I would be more impressed. The album starts off with “Feel Inside” f/ Nas, a true hip-hop record that delivers that MJB level of quality. Another track “Mr. Wrong” f/ Drake was released as the second single off of the album, and delivers everything you can ask for in a great record. Just about anything with Drake on the track is a sure fire winner as of late. This is the type of track you expect from Mary. It’s a record that is relatable and highlights Mary’s signature style and sound. Another collaborative piece “Love a Woman” a sensual guide written to a man as to how to love a woman, in my opinion was a little lack luster.  With the two divas on the track I just expected more. There seemed to be a missing element with this song. I like the song, but with the caliber of each artist I set the bar pretty high and they seemed to just miss the mark.

A few of the songs that I did appreciate were “No Condition” A profession of her realization that she is no longer in the condition to be in love with a certain individual.  This is a rhythmic, soulful jam that reminds you why Mary is at the level she has obtained. Other tracks that stand out to me are “Empty Prayers” A heart wrenching ballad depicting the dramatic end to what seemed to now be a one sided relationship. And the last track of the album “The Living Proof” an powerful emotion stirring song that was also featured on the soundtrack for the motion picture The Help.

Collectively I don’t think the project lived up to the expectation of being deemed the sequel to such a classic album such as My Life. Glad to see Mary still contributing to the industry, but if she plans to follow up Act 1 with a Act 2 I personally think there is work to be done.

Recommendations: Midnight Drive, Mr. Wrong, No Condition, Empty Prayers & The Living Proof
